Explore and become a part of the landscape of food justice in Northwest Queens with Socrates Sculpture Park and Queens Action Council (QuAC)’s annual Queens Food Day! This is a fun and interactive day packed with a variety of community organizations sharing knowledge and resources on nutrition education, food affordability and accessibility, urban farming, planting and gardening, sustainability, and healthy living.
WHAT IS FOOD JUSTICE?
Food justice is communities exercising their right to grow, sell, access and eat healthy food from the ground (grassroots efforts) up (advocacy and partnership with community based organizations). Healthy food is fresh, nutritious, affordable, culturally-appropriate, and grown locally with care for the well-being of the land, workers, animals and consumers of all racial and socio-economic backgrounds.
Join us for activities, conversations, cooking demos, and community building. Through movement, music, and monologue, Lauren Hale Biniaris’ performance of “Hungry” explores our world’s fraught relationship with seeds. Queens Action Council (QuAC) will also moderate a special panel featuring community representatives in the realms of urban agriculture, transportation, health, and more.
Participating partners include Hellgate Farm, NYC Compost Project at Big Reuse, Allergic to Salad, Smiling Hogshead Ranch, Spice Tree Organics, The Connected Chef, and DSNY Organics Collection.
